Arches National Park
is renowned for its abundance of natural arches, containing one of the
largest concentrations of these natural phenomenon in the world. But Arches
National Park is much more than arches. Situated on a plateau high above
the Colorado River, near Moab, Arches NP offers splendid desert landscapes
of petrified sand dunes and colorful rock formations, set against the backdrop
of the La Sal Mountains.
You enter the park via
a steep, winding drive from park headquarters at near river level, ascending
to the top of the rim of the plateau. The first prominent feature of the
park is a small canyon lined by shear rock escarpments and towering spires,
aptly called Park Avenue. From here, the park road leads to several fascinating
points of interest, including quite an array of natural arches found throuhgout
the park. For those who are willing, the relatively moderate hike to Delicate
Arch is the one by-foot excursion you must do in Arches National Park.
The photographs in this
photo tour were taken in May of 2005 and September of 2006. They highlight
the scenic splendor found along the paved roads leading to and through
Arches National Park and along some of the park's most popular hiking trails.
